As many of you know True North has recently started a mentoring group on the outside of the prisons.  This is to accommodate the large number of youth who want a mentor but are not matched up before they leave due to the lack of mentors.  The group provides them with a fun way to stay plugged in to True North Ministry.

This past Monday we took the boys to a recording studio in Cuyahoga Falls and let me tell you they had a ball!  Mark and I facilitated a song called “The Overcomers”.  The young men were challenged to write a positive rap verse about how they had overcome challenges in their life.  John (who’s picture is below, on the right) told me that he was not planning to rap.  When he saw how much fun the others were having, he worked up the courage and delivered a few lines, they were actually really good!

Chad, mentor of Rasheed (bottom picture), told me that on the ride home Dennis was calling his friends saying things like “hey man I was just in the studio!!”.

It’s my hope that the church will rise up and mentor these youth, but until then we appreciate the mentors who are faithful to come to our groups and hang out with the youth who do not yet have a mentor.

Last Month TNM Director Becky Retzer lead a group of eight Volunteer Missionaries to Scioto JCF, near Columbus Ohio.  Over the two day outreach the Volunteers had the opportunity to work closely with 16 young ladies.  The Outreach focused on life lessons such as ‘taming the tongue’ and ‘letting down the mask’.  ”We had one of the best times of worship in years,” said Becky.  All the carnival games, cookout food, and cans of whip cream, were happily sacrificed to bless the young women and plant seeds for the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Join us in prayer for the young women who are imprisoned at the Scioto JCF, and as God leads you, join them on the next outreach!!

Mentee of the Week

 

Christian is a 15 year old from Cleveland who is currently incarcerated at the Indian River JCF.  His favorite subjects in school are math, world history, and home economics.  Some of his interests include sports and working with animals.  When Becky (TNM Director) meet with Christian for the first time she challenged him to go a whole week without getting a behavior write-up.  The next time Becky was at the facility she learned that Christian had gone the entire week without getting a write-up.  Christian thrives off of encouragement; something that’s been lacking in his life.  A mentor voluntarily stepping in with the encouragement of Jesus Christ, can make all the difference.  Click the link below to become Christians mentor.

Mentee Of The Week

Still Waiting: Meet Dennis, a 17 year old young man who has a dream of going to barber school.  His favorite subject in school is math and he likes many different kinds of sports.  Dennis has a desire to make money legally while doing something positive with his time.  He needs someone to show him how to pursue the positive goals he has set for himself.  A mentor who is willing to pour into his life can help him use his creativity and work ethic for the good of himself and the good of the people around him.  Since being at Cuyahoga Hills JCF Dennis has been an active participant in the “Man Up” Bible Study.  He does not know Jesus as his Savior but is hungry to know more about God.  Please pray for Dennis to be paired with a mentor before time runs out on the opportunity for him to be matched!
